Phek, March 16 (MExN): One day training cum awareness programme on Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Right Act (PPVFRA) was conducted by KVK Phek sponsored by PPVFRA, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India on March 16.
The programme started with an exhibition where varied seeds of cereal, pulses and vegetables were displayed by the farmers of different villages. Dr. T Esther Longkumer ACTO Soil Science welcomed the gathering with an introduction of the programme, while Dr. Hannah Krujia ACTO Agronomy, delivered brief report on the farmer’s variety registration.
Dr. A. H Khan, Deputy Registrar PPVFRA Guwahati presented on implementation of PPV & FR Act, 2001 India where he highlighted about the biodiversity hot spot in India, he emphasized on North east India and also mentioned that 25% of forest is under North East. He explained about the conventions and agreements related to farmers rights and encouraged the farmers to register traditional seeds and mentioned about awards under different categories for farmers sponsored by the Authority.
Detailed information on registration and protection of plant varieties and farmers rights under PPVFRA was delivered by Dr. A.K.Singh, PVE, PPVFRA, Guwahati. The programme was followed by interaction and registration of farmers variety where farmers participated actively. Programme was chaired and words of appreciation were delivered by Keniseto Chucha, Farm Manager. Altogether 104 farmers participated in the programme.
