Training youth to be ‘Waste Wise Managers’

Dimapur, April 30 (MExN): A programme to empower young people as ‘Waste Wise Managers’ for better urban solid waste management in Dimapur city kicked off today at Pro Rural’s office with the slogan “A clean city is a strong reflection of our moral and civic values.”  Fifteen volunteers from three localities/ colonies - Supply Colony, Lake View Colony and Notun Bosti (Ao Khel) attended the first batch of the training and have resolved to take up a step forward for better sanitation management in their respective localities/ colonies, informed a press release.

According to the note, the participants expressed a deep sense of concern for their localities “which are far from the reach of any sort of waste/sanitation management.” They pointed out that hardly there is any public designated garbage dump or its management by the department concerned, the note said.  “Most often, wastes are dumped on the roadsides or unofficial dumping sites with no option available which is found to be unhygienic for the residents as well as for the environment.” The participants, the note added, also felt that it is their own responsibility to keep their own surroundings clean and healthy and they all gave positive note to carry out their task of creating a healthy environment starting from their own locality.

Kahuli Swu, a Pro Rural staff, gave a brief introduction about waste management and the purpose of the training. Meanwhile, Athilu Khrasi, the team leader of Pro Rural, which is a youth-led initiative, animated the technical session on different types of waste and the importance of segregation and controlling waste at source. He also highlighted the basic principle of efficient solid waste management practice based on 3Rs - Reduce, Re-use and Recycle.

“Come this December and let’s watch out whose locality/colony will be adjourned the best waste managed colony in Dimapur city,” said L. Kamo, also a team member from Pro Rural while sharing the different activities to be carried out by the Waste Wise Managers.

The note mentioned that Pro Rural is actively joining hands in campaigning for a clean and green Dimapur and has carried out various programmes on environment issues and concern in the past as well.
