Workshop on waste management and recycling

A two-day workshop on waste management and recycling – ‘Trash for life’ - commenced here today at Hotel East Gate with Khilda Baiti Rohmah from Indonesia as the resource person.
The training is being organised by Green Connections, a non-profit organisation which aims at promoting eco-tourism destinations, waste management, forest conservation and livelihood, led by Kevichülie Meyase and Neikedolie Hiekha as the chairman and secretary respectively.
The inaugural programme was also graced by Rajesh Soundararajan, Deputy Commissioner of Kohima. Delivering the keynote address, Soundararajan emphasized on the importance on sustainable waste management, which he said is essential for a healthy living.
“Waste management and recycling is not only about how a city should look clean, but it is also for a healthy living,” the DC said while he made an ardent call to all the citizens to inculcate the habit of staying healthy and living healthy.
“People are not averse to change. Indeed, all citizens welcome change,” he said and urged those responsible citizens to spearhead in giving the leadership towards this venture. To this, the DC also lauded the initiative and leadership provided by the Green Connections, while he also urged them to reach out to the people with the importance of sustainable waste management and recycling.
Giving an introduction to the workshop, Kejaroko Pier stated that the initiative was organised with the attempt to learn on waste management and further to manage our waste and reuse for the betterment of ourselves and for our environment.
The resource person Khilda, an Environmental Engineer from Indonesia a founder of 'Trash for life' and an activist of waste management spoke on the theme of the programme. She shared about some of her experiences on how far she and her organisation have progressed. She demonstrated on managing kitchen waste to manure and techniques of making bio degradable plastic and using used toothpaste cover to make bags, paper to ornaments etc. It may be mentioned that Khilda does recycling and waste management in a very unique way by utilizing waste efficiently and economically.
It may be mentioned that Khilda received the Ashoka Young Change Maker award in 2009, followed by Danamon award in 2011, Tupperware She Can award in 2012, Women Inspiration Nova Magazine in 2014, Women Inspiration Natur-e in 2015, CNN Heroes in 2017 and Entrepreneur award from Indonesia Bank in 2017, among others.
