A tribal walkathon under the theme “Celebrating the essence of tribal culture” took place in Kohima as part of the concluding events of Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh Pakhwada 2025 on November 15.
The walkathon, joined by various tribes, started from Nagaland Civil Secretariat junction and culminated at Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) gate.
The walkathon was flagged off by H Tovihoto Ayemi, MLA and Advisor for Tribal Affairs & Election, Nagaland. He highlighted the significance of this year’s observance as it marks Birsa Munda’s 150th birth anniversary.
He acknowledged the longstanding contributions of tribal communities to the nation through culture, art, music, and craftsmanship. He encouraged everyone to unite for the progress of the state and the nation.
In her welcome remarks, Anjelina Tajen, Secretary, Tribal Affairs Department emphasized that the programme was organised to honour the spirit of the Janjatiya community and to pay tribute to tribal leader Birsa Munda, whose role in nation-building is widely recognised.
She noted that the event celebrates rich traditions and vibrant culture, while calling for collective efforts toward tribal empowerment.
She urged everyone to uphold Birsa Munda’s values of freedom, equality and justice.
The programme was organised by Tribal Research Institute, Nagaland, Department of Tribal Affairs, Government of Nagaland and funded by Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India.

Later, L. Kiusumong Tikhir, Joint Secretary, Tribal Affairs Department handed over prize to the winners of the Tribal cuisine competition.
Khiamniungan, Phom and Konyak bagged 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively.
Judges for cuisine competition included Asano Angami, Senior Chef, Niathu Group, and Chenti Phom.
Tribal painting exhibition also marked the occasion.
