President, Ura Academy, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, today expressed apprehension that the strong fabric of Naga society is being destroyed by tribalism and appealed for reversing the trend saying, “Since Nagas are a small race, tribalism should not divide them any further.”
Addressing the golden jubilee celebration of Tenyiphe Village Council as chief guest here at the village ground on Saturday, the Ura Academy president also said Nagas need to do research on their history and origin and document them in order to preserve their identity for posterity.
Liezietsu called upon the Tenyimia people to “find the roots of our evolution and work towards preserving the values of unity and integrity of the Naga people.” The former chief minister also urged Nagas to develop a sense of respect for the elders which, he said, is the foundation of a good thriving society.
Narrating the different stages of his life as a politician, a statesman and an academician, Dr Shürhozelie reminded that inception of the Ura Academy was during the most tumultuous times that Nagas encountered.
“In the year 1970, some scholars and intellectuals came up with the idea of setting up an Angami literature committee with Bilieu, Rev. Tsolie and myself as its pioneers with an objective to preserve and promote the Tenyidie dialect as a means to bring all the Tenyimia speaking people together under one fold,” he said.
Stating that the time has come for the Tenyimias and Nagas as a whole to come together and build a strong society that can withstand all adversaries, he stressed on the importance of maintaining one’s identity and dignity.
Leizietsu further impressed upon the younger generation to uphold and protect their roots so that that “outside forces do not come in to dominate or manipulate our people in our own land.”
“Today we need truthful leaders with vision for our people; leaders who can rise above differences and truthfully work for our people”, the veteran regionalist added.
Guest of honour and chairman Chümoukedima Village Council, Razouvotuo Chatsu, said many Tenyimia people have develop the negative habit of selling their own land for temporary gains and said Tenyiphe village should serve as an example of an intact village.
Chatsu also released the jubilee souvenir on the occasion. Earlier, chairman, TVC, Helie Kruse, delivered welcome address and Nolesa Zhotso, head GB of the village, pronounced blessings for the village. Other highlights of the jubilee celebration included special numbers and cultural items presented by various village groups and jubilee feast.
