TSEMINYU, APRIL 16 (MExN): The District Administration of Tseminyu, in partnership with the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW) under the SANKALP initiative and the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), organized block-level sensitization programmes on child rights and protection laws on April 9 and 11. The sessions took place at Council Halls in Sendenyu and Chunlikha villages.
The programmes aimed to raise awareness among local leaders and community members about child protection legislation. Neivotuonuo Rutsa, Legal Cum Probation Officer (LCPO) of Tseminyu, delivered a detailed presentation on the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, stressing the role of community leaders in identifying and addressing child-related concerns in accordance with legal frameworks.
She emphasized Section 74 of the JJ Act, which prohibits the disclosure of any information that may reveal a child’s identity, regardless of whether the child is a victim, witness, or accused. Rutsa also discussed the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, noting its gender-neutral approach and the seriousness with which such cases are treated. She cited a Supreme Court ruling stating that POCSO cases cannot be dismissed even if a settlement is reached between the parties involved.
Child Helpline Project Coordinator Kvulo Kent introduced the 1098 helpline through videos and a live demonstration, showcasing how children facing abuse, neglect, or exploitation can access support services.
Kumari Victoria Kent, District Mission Coordinator of DHEW, spoke on the government’s Mission Shakti initiative, encouraging attendees to promote the Women Helpline among community members.
Local leaders, including EAC Tseminyu Ruokuosetuo Tetso and Chunlikha Village Chairman Zanilo Seb, commended the initiative and advocated for more community-focused awareness programmes. The events concluded with closing prayers and votes of thanks, reinforcing the commitment to child protection at the grassroots level.
