Tuensang, January 12 (MExN): As part of the nationwide campaign MGNREGA Bachao Sangram, the District Congress Committee Tuensang (DCC) on Monday called for the immediate restoration of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
According to a press release, the campaign was held at the Congress Bhavan, Tuensang, and was led by the DCC president, secretary and party members.
Senior party leaders who participated included L Chuba Yim, General Secretary of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee and Tuensang in-charge; I N Mongba, PCC member from 54 A/C Tuensang Sadar II; and P Moa, PCC member from 51 A/C Noksen.
Addressing the gathering, the DCC President Chotsase Sangtam said that MGNREGA is a legal entitlement that guarantees 100 days of wage employment to every rural household. He warned that any dilution or removal of the scheme would affect wage security, accountability and livelihoods in rural areas.
Yim and Moa said that discontinuation of MGNREGA would reduce employment opportunities, concentrate implementation in the hands of contractors and weaken local control over livelihood support, particularly in villages.
The DCC secretary said that the Indian National Congress, through its nationwide campaign, is demanding full restoration of MGNREGA along with a guaranteed minimum daily wage of Rs 400 for rural workers.
Through this campaign, Tuensang DCC reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights of the rural workforce and called on the government to reinstate MGNREGA without delay , the release added.
