Tuensang district has highest TB prevalence

Dimapur, May 12 (MExN): A district level project, Axshaya- the global fund to fight for AIDS, TB and malaria and round- 9 was formally launched at Tuensang district by Thanghoi, Deputy CMO Tuensang at District TB Centre. This was stated by Catholic Health Association of India District, Coordinator Kyupise Sangtam in a press release.
The CMO Tuensang said that the Government of India aims to eradicate complete TB epidemic by 2015 basing on Millennium Development Goals. The CMO in his speech disclosed that Tuensang district is one of the highest TB prevalence district in the state with above 700 TB patients. With numbers increasing, he suggested that the District TB Hospital must be upgraded and provide basic health facilities for TB patients. Issues such as lack of basic amenities and trained medical officers, modern laboratories and technicians need to be addressed by the State Government. While appreciating the government for giving attention on road developments, building constructions in Tuensang district he urged the Government to give prior importance to health and education systems which need to be streamlined for the welfare of our community.
He also added that inorder to do away with this cause, Government alone can not reach out to the grassroot levels. Therefore, NGOs, civil societies and churches must involve for the control and prevention on TB at all levels. Civil societies must endeavor to address challenges in programme implementation and access to quality TB care by contributing and giving their services with active involvement at every possible capacity.
Catholic Health Association of India District, Coordinator Kyupise Sangtam briefed on Axshaya TB Project and said that it mainly focuses on advocacy, communication and social mobilization (ACSM). Sangtam said India bears 21% of the global burden of incident TB cases and has the highest estimated incidence of Multi Drug Resistant-TB cases (MDR-TB), 2 deaths every three minutes, 1000 deaths a day and 370,000 deaths due to TB each year in India.
He said that addressing these challenges requires a concrete response from the government and civil societies, this being the overall strategy of the Global Fund Round 9 proposal having three Principal Recipients viz Central TB Division (CTD) (Government of India - GoI), and a partnership of 16 NGOs organized under 2 civil society Principle Recipients (the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, or ‘The Union’, and World Vision India). The overall aims and objectives of the project is to Increase case detection, Increase cure rates, Universal access, Decrease TB incidence, Decrease TB mortality, Reduce risk of MDR-TB and to improve quality of life of the people. He gave a pledge message to the district by saying “We strive towards a better and healthier world so join us”.
Linghomong, Statistical Assistant, RNTCP also spoke on the function and assure the CHAI to give their full cooperation and involvement to reach the MDGs goal by 2015. The programme was attended by CMO staff, RNTCP, ICTC, ART Centre, NRHM, DAPCU, DLN and The Peace Channel.
