Tuensang PLV conducts legal awareness campaign

Tuensang, April 10 (MExN): Week long legal awareness campaign was undertaken by Yemlongchaba Chang, Para Legal Volunteer (PLV) of Tuensang District Legal Services (TDLSA) where he conducted the programme in six villages including Chendang Saddle, New Chingmei, Chingmei, Waoshu, Yimpang and Taknyu. Yemlongchaba is also an awardee of the Regional (North-East) Best Para Legal Volunteer (PLV) 2016.  

Speaking to the students on Child’s Right, he highlighted on basic human rights and other statutory rights guaranteed under the Constitution of India. He mentioned that under the Constitution of India every child below the age of 14 years has the right to free and compulsory education and each one of them have a right to be protected against exploitation and further apprised them about the rights and protection of children laid down in various other laws like the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act 2012, Commission for Protection of Child Rights Act 2005 and Child Marriage Restraint Act.  

Speaking to the village council members, student unions, GBs, NGOs and village elders on Universal Adult Franchise, he shared the importance of Universal Adult Suffrage, where a citizen in a given society has the right to vote. He also explained the concept and meaning  of Democratic form of Government, which is a system of government in which power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system and lastly, urged upon them to encourage clean election.  

The awareness campaign was mainly organized to reach out to the poor and marginalized people. The targeted groups were the NGOs, students of government schools, village councils and GBs in all the six villages. A press release stated that he could reach out to a total of about 1000 beneficiaries  

Pamphlets and booklets on various acts and laws were distributed to the participant.
