On Saturday, unidentified individuals hacked into the official Twitter account of Kohima Smart City Development Limited (KSCDL) and used it to post spam tweets for hours.  When contacted, Lanu, Senior Technology Officer, KSCDL, told The Morung Express that none of the employees were aware of the security breach. It was only after this newspaper’s inquiry that workers of the government firm took down the spam tweets which were related to NFTs (Non-fungible Tokens) scams.

When inquired as to how the account was hacked, the official admitted that several individuals within the firm had access to the Twitter account from their personal devices. These included former employees as well. As such, the account might have been compromised from any one of these devices, he opined. Nevertheless, he assured that prompt action has been taken.

The security breach was not a one-off incident as previously; the Twitter accounts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath were also compromised, apart from other prominent personalities such as US President Joe Biden, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. All these accounts were hacked to spread crypto or NFT related spam messages to their oblivious followers.
