Kohima, May 18 (MExN): Two alleged members of underground groups were arrested in an intelligence-led operation carried out by Kohima Police in the state capital on Sunday, an official update from the PRO Kohima informed.
Police said the operation was launched after specific intelligence inputs were received at around 8 am regarding the movement of certain underground faction members in the main town area.
Acting on the inputs, Kohima Police mounted discreet surveillance across the town and, following sustained technical and physical monitoring, apprehended two persons from the Razhii Point area at around 2 pm, the officials said.
The arrested persons were identified as Kudukhoyi Vero (38), described by police as a self-styled “Chaplee Finance Kilonser” of the FGN (Rhakho group), and Mulevo Khesoh (35), identified as a self-styled “Colonel” of the NNC/FGN (Akavi Chishi group).
Both are residents of Phezoucha in Kohima and originally hail from Phek district, police said.
According to police, several incriminating documents linked to alleged extortion activities were recovered from their possession. These included 14 “Yearly Vehicle Tax” slips, one “Non-Local Tax” receipt, three unserved “Information letters” issued in the name of the self-styled Chaplee Finance Kilonser, two served and three unserved “Annual Commercial Tax” documents, 10 unserved “Residency Registration” slips, and one “Assignment Order” issued in the name of the self-styled Kedahge FGN (Akavi Chishi).
A case has been registered at North Police Station and further investigation is underway to ascertain the extent of the alleged extortion racket and identify other operatives, financiers and possible linkages to extortion activities in other districts, police said.
The arrested individuals are being interrogated, officials added.
Kohima Police also appealed to citizens and business establishments to report extortion demands without fear, assuring that the identities of complainants would be kept strictly confidential.
