A routine well cleaning task ended in tragedy at a place on the outskirts on Medziphema town. In the tragic mishap which occurred on the afternoon of April 4, two persons died from suspected asphyxiation and a third narrowly survived. As reported by the police, they were in the process of cleaning a private well.
One of the workers had climbed inside after pumping out the water, purportedly to remove debris, when he complained of shortness of breath and could not climb out. The second went in to help his colleague climb out but he too met the same fate. The third also went in to help the other two inside but could not.
Emergency rescue personnel, who were called in, could rescue one alive, while the other two did not survive. The bodies of the two deceased victims, said to be natives of Noklak district, were retrieved in the evening.
