
DIMAPUR, JUNE 6 (MExN): In a belated report reaching here, two men from Nagaland were allegedly assaulted by a group of person on June 4 late night for “selling non-vegetarian and northeastern food” at Chanakyapuri area, Ahmedabad.
Reports from news agencies including the Indian Express and the Times of India said an FIR was lodged Monday at the Sola police station in Ahmedabad on charges of causing voluntary hurt using dangerous weapons and criminal intimidation, among others. One person has been arrested in the case.
According to the complaint, Rovimezo Kehie, 33, was at home and his friend, Mapuyanger Jamir, 32, was working at the ‘One Stop North East Shop Food’ in the Chanakyapuri area of Ahmedabad when shop owner Hiren Patel called up Kehie to inform him that a fight had broken out at the shop and Jamir was not reachable by phone.
Patel requested Kehie to check in on the shop. When Kehie arrived at the shop, he found three people were quarrelling with Jamir. Upon seeing Kehie, they allegedly asked why Kehie and his friend were selling vegetables from outside in the area.
The trio then allegedly started beating up the two Naga men and a customer who tried to intervene.
Notably, Kehie and Jamir have been residing in Ahmedabad for over a decade. Kehie came to Ahmedabad as a student of the LD Engineering College 12 years ago.
According to the FIR, the assailants reportedly said that ‘Gujarat is a Hindu state and you are not even allowed to sell chicken.’ The FIR has not named any accused, but police said one of the accused has been identified as Pratik Dhobi, 27, and has been arrested. The remaining two accused have been identified as Mahavir and Rokdo.
