Two kidnapped truck drivers rescued

Two truck drivers, kidnapped by suspected militants for a ransom, were rescued by a joint team of Manipur police commandos and troops of Assam Rifles today, police said. 

The two drivers of the trucks transporting FCI rice were reportedly kidnapped by some armed miscreants from the Keiphundai area of Tamenglong district along the Imphal-Jiribam section of NH-37 yesterday (Thursday) morning around 8 am. A combined team of special police commando force of the Manipur police and troops of 39 Assam Rifles launched the rescue operation immediately. The combined team rescued them from a deep gorge of the mountainous area of the New Keiphundai today, around noon without any harm to the drivers, police added.

The rescued drivers have been identifued as Kangujam Brajamani (60) of Yairipok in Imphal East and Md Inao Khan (29) of Lakhinagar of Assam’s Cachar district. They were reportedly kidnapped by the suspected militants at gunpoint while they were heading towards Imphal with FCI rice from Jiribam. Police said that the combined team intercepted the two drivers being held hostage at a temporary hut in the deep gorge. The armed kidnappers, however, fled on seeing the approaching security forces,  police also said.

Meanwhile, Manipur Drivers’ Association (MDA) expressed its gratitude to the security forces, the police in Jiribam district and others involved in the operation for rescuing the kidnapped drivers unharmed.
