Dimapur, February 28 (MExN): In a major political development in the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), two councillors of the National People's Party (NPP) have joined the ruling Naga People’s Front (NPF).
Councillors Jonathan Yepthomi of Ward No. 23 and Nikali Sumi Chishi of Ward No. 7 officially joined the NPF at the party’s central office on Saturday, along with their supporters. The move increases the NPF’s tally to 17 members in the 23 wards.
“The move is expected to strengthen the NPF’s commitment to serving the people of Dimapur, with the councillors pledging to work together for the betterment of the people, focusing on development and progress in the city and the party,” Press Bureau of NPF stated in a press release.
Welcoming the two DMC councillors at the Central Office, NPF Secretary General and MLA Achumbemo Kikon stated that the people have realised the importance of a strong regional party to protect Naga identity. He credited Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio, who also serves as the party president, for inspiring many to join the NPF.
Kikon emphasised that the NPF is a “disciplined party” where power lies at the grassroots level, and urged the new leaders not to “disappoint the mandate of the people but to deliver goods to their people.”
DMC Chairman Hukheto Yepthomi, present at the event, assured that the new members would faithfully carry forward the party's principles faithfully.
