Two Power sub-divisions were inaugurated at Mokokchung by the Power Department, Government of Nagaland on March 4. The inauguration programme held at the Power House, Salangtem Ward, Mokokchung, Nagaland, was graced by KG Kenye, Minister, Power & parliamentary Affairs, Government of Nagaland as the guest of honour. 

The two sub-divisions, 33/11 KV, 2X10 MVA, Sub-station and 33/11 KV, 2x5 MVA Sub-stations are located at Salangtem and Majakong ward, Mokokchung. It was implemented under North Eastern Region Power System Improvement Project (NERSIP) by Power Grid on behalf of Power Department. 

Engineer-in-Chief of State Department of Power, Er Moa Aier recalled the years in the 1990s when there was only 4 MVA about 30 years ago. ‘The addition of 30 MVA upgradation is a historical significance of the day. Another significance is the unity of three forces coming together to make the project, a successful completion,’ he stated.

The guest of honour, Kenye extended his due acknowledgment to the unity and consistent efforts of GoI, GoN, the authorities of World Bank and the ministry in making the project a grand success. Considering the fact that invention of power is one of the most defining moments, he said, ‘power is the essence of life.’ 

Additionally he asserted, ‘countries that have access to more power are more productive, more powerful and advanced.’ He drew focus on Nagaland’s requirements for power, which is more than 180 mega watts, whereas, “we generate only 12 to 24 mega watts.” Adding to his point, he suggested on producing Nagaland's own power plants by using individual and group's spring, river and natural resources for the same purpose. In conclusion Kenye said, “if we can mobilise the people to come forward, the contribution of these potentials can be harnessed and the money we spend in buying powers from power grid and other States can be saved for other development works.” 

Asangla Imti, IAS, Secretary Power, regretfully shared on the absence of notable power projects inspite of the Government of Nagaland trying its best to improve the condition. She also focused on the need for robust infrastructure for sub transmission and distribution which is lying unachieved. 

Tongpang Ozükum, Advisor, Water Resources and Chairman, DPDB extended gratitude to the people, civil societies, the Power department and the Government of Nagaland on completion of the project. He also acknowledged the Chief Minister for his contributions in making the project a success. 

The programme was chaired by Er Penrithung, Chief Engineer, (T&G) Department of Power, short greetings were delivered by by the president of All Ward Union Mokokchung Town (AWUMT) and President, Ao Senden and vote of thanks was proposed by Er Chutsüsie Thowachu, EE, Mokokchung Electrical Department.
