UAPA: District Adm, police chiefs, & magistrates delegated powers 

KOHIMA, September 29 (MExN): In the backdrop of the Union government blacklisting the Popular Front of India and 8 other affiliates as “unlawful associations,” the Nagaland state government has directed the Commissioner of Police, Deputy Commissioners and district magistrates to exercise powers accordingly as conferred under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.  Along with the Popular Front of India (PFI), its associates or affiliates or fronts that were declared unlawful on September 28 include Rehab India Foundation (RIF), Campus Front of India (CFI), All India Imams Council (AIIC), National Confederation of Human Rights Organisation (NCHRO), National Women’s Front, Junior Front, Empower India Foundation and Rehab Foundation, Kerala.

The Nagaland Chief Secretary, J Alam, through a DIPR release, informed that in the exercise of the powers conferred by section 42 of the UAP Act, “the Central Government has directed… that all the States and Union Territory Administrations shall exercise the powers exercisable by the Central Government under sections 7 and section 8 of the said Act.”

It added that as conveyed by the Central government, the state governments and Union Territory administrations “may, by order in writing, direct that any power which has been directed to be exercised by it, shall, in such circumstances and under such conditions, as may be specified in the direction, be exercised” by the aforementioned officers of districts.
