UCC ‘most dangerous threat’ to democratic Constitution’: JDU Nagaland

Wokha, November 27 (MExN): The Janata Dal United (JDU), on November 27, flayed the reported plan of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on UCC implementation in Gujarat and called it a threat to democracy.

“The JDU, being solemnly secular party, is extremely troubled to know that the BJP has decided to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Gujarat once it comes to power again,” stated a press communiqué  issued by JDU, Nagaland.

The party said that the “development only a beginning which will spread to the rest of the country” and termed it as the “most dangerous threat to the democratic Constitution of India.”

The JDU Nagaland further alleged that the decision is a sign that the BJP is ‘totally surrendering to the dictate of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).’

Accordingly, the JDU Nagaland said that the Naga people should be the most worried regarding the decision as they have ‘lived a life of democracy deeply rooted in the village republic from time immemorial’ and were free from any external interference.

As such, the UCC conditioned by dominant religious ethics of the majority, would subjugate the Nagas’ age old cultures and traditions, it further claimed.

Over the years,  Nagas having embraced Christianity overwhelmingly and this is also a very important factor when it comes to UCC, the party stated.

‘Therefore, Naga people must wake up and defend themselves so that our history and identity is protected from any external religiously riddled aggression,’ it added.
