Ukhrul/Guwahati, April 1 (MExN): Journalist bodies have mourned the demise of veteran journalist and Imphal correspondent for The Telegraph Khelen Thokchom on April 1. The Ukhrul District Working Journalists Association (UDWJA) in a condolence message stated, “The press fraternity in Ukhrul district is much grieved by the death, which occurred all too sudden, of a loving man who had maintained a good and brotherly relationship with all his media colleagues from both hills and the valley alike.” It expressed belief that late Thokchom “who had served the society in different capacities and made a mark as a diligent journalist, had contributed much to the growth of modern journalism in the state in the 90s when the profession emerged as a promising industry.” Many in the field of journalism, UDWJA stated, will continue to feel his conspicuous absence for a long time. It offered sympathies to the bereaved family. Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) in a separate statement expressed grief at the sudden demise of Thokchom whom it described as one of the active media persons of North East India. On the other hand, JFA has invited all media persons of Assam to attend a memorial meeting to pay tributes to senior journalist Mohan Kakati, who passed away on March 26 after suffering from illness for some time. The meeting is scheduled for 3:00 pm on April 3 at Guwahati Press Club. Kakati (63) used to work for Dainik Janambhumi, Dainik Asom, Ajir batori, Asomiya Pratidin, Aji, Asomiya Khabar, Niyamia Barta etc. “Understanding the life of a scribe is precious to the society and nation, we urge all media persons to maintain a sound health pursuing preventive healthcare initiatives along with their families. Moreover, we appeal to the governments to support the bereaved families at this time of crisis,” said the JFA statement.
