UG functionaries cannot carry arms till February 23

DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 4 (MExN): In the run up to the Nagaland State Assembly Election, Chairman of the Cease-Fire Monitoring Group (CFMG), Maj Gen (Rtd) N George on Monday held separate meetings with the NSCN (I-M), NSCN (K) and GPRN/NSCN at Police Complex, Chumukedima.

Official sources said the purpose of the meetings was to inform the groups that from February 7 till polling day (Feb 23), none of their functionaries or cadres would be allowed to carry arms. The restriction would apply to ID-card holders too.

In case of emergency, the underground groups were informed to contact the Assam Rifles or the nearest military post.  Otherwise, by routine, none of the groups’ functionaries or cadres would be permitted to carry arms.

While the NSCN (K) and GPRN/NSCN did not raise objections, the NSCN (I-M) reportedly expressed reservations about the order and cited that the ceasefire ground rules allowed them to carry weapons. But the message has been conveyed and defaulters would be treated accordingly, sources quoting the CFMG chairman added.

The government side was represented by Banuo Z Jamir, Additional Chief Secretary and Commissioner, P F Zeliang IGP (R), Brig Pem Tsharing, Col Manuhar Sharma Col GS HQ IGAR (North), A K Kanaujia DIGP (ops) CRPF, Kohima, Bhajan Lal SOTO DIS (OPS) Kohima,

The GPRN/NSCN was led by CFSB Supervisor C Singson, the NSCN (I-M) by CFMG Convenor Kraiba Chawang while the NSCN (K) was represented by lone member T Lincoln.
