
Hyderabad, February 21 (MExN): The Department of Cardiology, Cardiothoracic and Heart-Lung Mechanical Assist Devices Team at Yashoda Hospital Hyderabad successfully performed a “JARVIK implant post auricular (behind the ear) driveline” for a 31-year-old male patient from Uganda recently.
Okwara Joseph, the patient is a professional international footballer and he experienced chest pain while playing football in Uganda in April 2021, informed a press release.
He was diagnosed with coronary artery disease and severe Left Ventricular Dysfunction and was admitted to the hospital several times in his hometown, with complaints of breathlessness, swelling in both lower limbs, and abdominal distension, it said.
After being diagnosed with ischemic cardiomyopathy, Joseph travelled to India for further treatment and was admitted due to worsening heart failure symptoms on December 13, it added.
As per the release, the patient was thoroughly evaluated by Yashoda’s multidisciplinary team of doctors from the Departments of cardiology, Cardiothoracic, Heart and Lung Mechanical Assist Device, and a left ventricular assist device was planned as a destination therapy.
Yashoda provided the most up-to-date and advanced treatment modality (JARVIK 2000 SERIES) with state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge technology and Joseph underwent successful surgery on December 24, 2021 receiving a ‘new lease on life,’ it added. He was discharged from the hospital on January 28, 2022.
The JARVIK 2000 series is an advanced and cutting-edge LVAD device that is used as a destination therapy in patients with advanced heart failure, giving them a new lease on life, the release informed.
