UGs’ “tax” discouraging young Nagas’ business

Dimapur, August 21 (MExN): The Chakhesang students’ community laments that fact that while Naga youths struggle to set up new enterprises and business in the face of a chronic unemployment problem in Nagaland, underground cadres take the first opportunity to tax these youths. This is the reason youths are discouraged form resorting to self-employment, the underground factions are reminded.

The Chakhesang Students’ Union was making a reference to the attack on former Angami Students’ Union president Medo Yokha by one NSCN-K cadre identified as “sergeant major” Yehokhu Sema in the course of an extortion attempt. The CSU also lauded the courage of the student leader in confronting the cadre even in the face of danger.

“This is not the first of its kind that the Nagas particularly the young Nagas who are taking up self-employment activities for survival and building the Naga nation, have been facing” a note from the CSU stated. The CSU lamented that all the underground factions take the first opportunity to tax any new ventures be in shops of restaurants. “The taxation spree has discouraged the youths of Nagaland in taking up self-employment in Nagaland! The Naga people are economically crippled by underground taxation and the Naga lives are at risk from gun-toting Naga undergrounds who go around collecting taxes” the Chakhesang students stated.

The underground factions are asked to desist from collecting taxes for the fact that this practice has become detrimental and a menace to the Naga people’s growth economically. Moreover, it has affected the students’ education as well, the CSU stated. The CSU reminded: “For the Nagas to grow and live prosperously, the undue taxation of undergrounds must stop.”
