‘Ulikhrei Folk Group’ participates in National Folk and Cultural Festival

Ulikhrei Folk Group, a vibrant ensemble of young talents after performing at the Himalaya Sanskriti Utsav on March 21.

Ulikhrei Folk Group, a vibrant ensemble of young talents, is making mark with their folk rendition, traditional and contemporary. 

The young group comprising 12 members, 6 women and 6 men from Chedema village led by Dr Keneilhoulie Medom participated at the ‘Himalaya Sanskriti Utsav’, the National Folk and Cultural Festival, an event organised by KALASHRAY at Lychee Bagh, Dilaram Chowk, Dehradun, Uttarakhand from March 21-23. 

The festival saw participation from all Indian states as well as countries within the Himalayan region with Folk dances, Panel discussions and musical performances.  

The group’s performances included traditional dances and songs to showcase the vibrant cultural traditions of Nagaland. The programme was graced by Director Raja ji Tiger Reserve, Dehradun, Koko Rose, IFS.  

Speaking about the participation of the group, Dr Medom informed that the Ulikhrei Folk Group’s participation in the festival was made possible by sponsorship and assistance of Governor of Nagaland La Ganasen and Director-General of Assam Rifles Vikas Lakhera. Dr Medom, said the group was formed in 2022 dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of their community through music, dance, and storytelling.  He informed that the group’s repertoire includes folk songs, dances, and instrumental pieces that reflect the diversity and richness of their cultural roots. 

Explaining the meaning behind the group’s name, Dr Medom said U means Song, Li means Singing and Khrei meaning Peer Group. “The group was initially created with the primary goal of learning and safeguarding the essence of our folk music. The members of the ensemble were deeply involved in the Chedema Baptist Church Choir collective,” Dr Medom informed. Since its formation, the group has performed at various events.
