Fibroids, also known as uterine leiomyomas, are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the walls of the uterus. “According to recent studies, 37.65% of women in rural India and 24% in urban areas are diagnosed with uterine fibroids”. These benign tumors are a common health concern for women worldwide, including those in Nagaland. While they can occur in any woman during her reproductive years, many women in Nagaland suffer in silence due to a lack of awareness and access to healthcare resources. This often results in the condition going undiagnosed, leaving women to endure unnecessary pain and complications.

Common Symptoms and Impact
Fibroids don't always cause symptoms, but when they do, the effects can be life-altering. Common symptoms include:

•    Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding.

•    Severe pelvic pain or pressure.

•    Frequent urination or difficulty emptying the bladder.

•    Constipation and bloating.

•    Pain during intercourse.

Women in Nagaland often dismiss these symptoms as 'normal period issues,' delaying diagnosis and treatment. If left untreated, fibroids may result in complications such asanemia, fertility issue.

Diagnosis and Treatment
Early diagnosis plays a crucial role in managing uterine fibroids. The most common diagnostic tests include ultrasound and MRI, which help assess the size and location of fibroids. Treatment options range from medication and hormonal therapies to minimally invasive procedures like uterine artery embolization (UAE) and MRI-guided ultrasound surgery, aimed at reducing symptoms. In more severe cases, surgery may be considered, with options such as myomectomy to preserve the uterus or hysterectomy as a last resort. Lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy weight and managing stress, can also contribute to better outcomes for women living with fibroids

In Nagaland, the issue of fibroids remains a largely silent struggle. Many women continue to suffer in silence, unaware of the potential for relief or treatment. It is crucial to raise awareness about fibroids, their symptoms, and the treatment options available to empower women to take control of their health.

Fibroids may be a common condition, but they should not be an ignored one. By increasing awareness, encouraging regular health screenings, and providing women with access to the necessary resources, we can begin to address the silent struggles that many women in Nagaland face. Empowering women with the knowledge and tools to recognize and treat fibroids can have a profound impact on their overall well-being and quality of life.
