Dimapur, October 7 (MExN): The Wildlife Division, Dimapur celebrated Wildlife Week at Government Higher Secondary School, Half Nagarjan on October 6 with the theme ‘Understanding the voiceless animals.’ The programme saw participation of principal, headmaster, teachers, and students of the school, officials and staffs from Wildlife Division, Dimapur, Blyth Tragopan Breeding Centre, Kohima, and SEFTI Dimapur.
In his keynote address, YM Jami, IFS, CF and Director, Intanki National Park enlightened the participants on the success story of Amur Falcon conservation and satellite tagging of the bird. He also cited an example of how vultures play an important role in keeping ecosystem healthy and clean by feeding on decomposed carcasses of dead animals and thereby prevents the spread of deadly diseases. He lamented that the vultures population has steeply declined in recent times after feeding on carcass of cattle which were administered psychotropic drugs (Diclofenac) and as such pose a serious environmental hazards. Principal of GHSS, Half Nagarjan stressed on how the various developmental activities have led to the degradation of wildlife habitat, resulting in rapid depletion of wildlife in the state. The need to effectively conserve the same were emphasised upon.
Magdaline, a biologist from Blyth Tragopan and Breeding Centre spoke on the distribution, population, reproduction, the threat to bird and conservation status accorded to the state bird. She appealed to the participants, especially the student community, to pass on the message of conservation of the bird.
As part of Wildlife Week programme, activities such as essay and drawing competition were held in junior and senior levels. Posters and bookmarks were distributed to all the participants. The quiz competition was opened to all the students with Longshak, Forester-I, Wildlife Crime Control Unit as the Quizmaster. Wildlife Warden, Dimapur Caroline Angami, IFS gave away the prize to the winners. About 250 people attended the programme.
