The Secretary, Information Technology & Technical Education, Government of Nagaland has expressed concern that it has received only a negligible response for the Nasscom Assessment of Competency (NAC) tests slated on December 12 at Kohima, Dimapur and Mokokchung. The NAC test is to be conducted in association with DONER and NASSCOM and Nagaland reportedly has a quota of 2000 students for the test. However so far in spite of the best of efforts, only about 300 students have registered, informed the concerned department and made an appeal to students to take the test. The NAC test is open to all final year graduation students and all graduates of last 2-3 years. There are no fees.
“If enough students do not register for the test, NASSCOM might not conduct this test in Nagaland from next year and our students may be asked to come to Guwahati”, stated Abhishek Singh the concerned Secretary.
It may be mentioned that the NAC test was scheduled for an earlier date but was postponed because of low turnout of applicants compelling the department to set a new date. However even after this, the number of applicants is only around 300.
It may be mentioned that the ITeS-BPO industry is growing at an overwhelming pace and giving a major fillip to the Indian economy. India has established its leadership position globally in the offshoring market and now the shortage of skilled manpower is one of the key barriers to the fast growth of the industry.
NAC is an assessment-cum-certification program supported and endorsed by the Indian ITES-BPO industry which prepares one against the skills that are required to join the industry. Candidates who perform well in the NAC Certification Test would stand a good chance for getting jobs immediately in the leading ITES-BPO organizations.
At a time when concerns are being raised about the ballooning unemployment among educated Naga youths, the poor response for joining the IT industry is worrying policy makers, who were under the impression that job opportunities are the need of the hour and that the massive quota being provided to the youths of the State should have been used by the unemployed youths.
