There was no significant headway in the investigation into the alleged formaldehyde leak incident in Chümoukedima on September 30. Police are investigating into the case, nevertheless, informed police sources.
According to the sources, the suspected formaldehyde was destined for a plywood factory in Chümoukedima. The name of the factory was not disclosed but the sources said that a case of “negligence” was registered against the owner of the factory. “Case has been registered. The investigation is going on. We’ll try to find out the one who was responsible and how it all happened.”
The police were said to have taken the statements of the driver and other occupants of the vehicle, which was transporting the alleged formaldehyde. There was no report of any hospitalisation as a result of the leak, which happened when the formaldehyde was being transported on a pickup truck. Following the leak, local residents have complained of a “pungent” smell filling the air around the site of the leak, raising concerns about the potential health impacts of the incident.
