Upgrading skills & knowledge of citrus growers

Mokokchung, March 3 (MExN): In order to recognize and protect the rights of farmers in respect of their contribution in conserving, improving and providing plant genetic resources for development of new plant varieties and to upgrade the skills and knowledge of citrus growers to increase fruit production with enhanced quality, National Research centre  for citrus, Nagpur, Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH), DAC, GoI, Medziphema and Department of Horticulture, Nagaland had jointly organized trainings. A press release informed that  a one-day training cum awareness programme on protection of plant varieties and farmers right Act 2001 with special reference to citrus, and a two-day training on ‘production technology of citrus for NEH Region’ were held at Town Hall, Mokokchung on February 26 and February 27-28 respectively.

Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, Murohu Chotso graced the inaugural programme for both the trainings on February 26. Speaking as chief guest, he stated that the training was being conducted at the very right time with relevant topics, particularly in context of Mokokchung as citrus is grown on a large scale in the district, but there is decline in its production.

The resource persons for the technical session for both the trainings  were Dr. Lallan Ram, Director CIH, Medziphema; Dr. I P Singh, Pr. Scientist, NRC for citrus Nagpur;  Dr. A K Das Pr. Scientist, NRC for citrus Nagpur; and Dr. C N Rao, Sr, Scientist NRC for citrus, Nagpur. As a part of the training, field visit & practical hands on demonstration was conducted at citrus orchard of C Imli, a progressive farmer at Chuchuyimpang village.

During the valedictory programme, participants were given certificates. Altogether, 230 orange growers from Mokokchung, Phek, Wokha, Kiphire, Tuensang, Mon and Dimapur districts participated.
