Urgent need for preventive measures in schools amidst heatwave

As Dimapur grapples with an unprecedented heatwave, the well-being of our children has become a pressing concern. While schools are nurturing grounds for young minds, the current heatwave poses significant health risks, particularly for our youngest students in nursery, LKG, and UKG.

In light of this, I would like to suggest a few preventive measures that could alleviate the discomfort and potential health hazards faced by these children.

Relaxation of School Uniforms: During the summer months, it would be beneficial to relax the strict uniform guidelines, especially concerning shoes and neckties. Allowing students to wear light, breathable clothing and comfortable footwear can help prevent heat-related illnesses. A more relaxed approach to uniforms would enable children to stay cool and comfortable throughout the day.

Adjustment of School Timings: Consideration should be given to adjusting school timings to avoid the peak heat hours. An earlier start to the school day, with dismissal before the intense midday heat, could significantly reduce the risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke among students.

Provision of Drinking Water for Parents: Parents who drop off and pick up their children often find themselves waiting outside the school premises. Providing drinking water facilities for these parents would not only be a gesture of goodwill but also a necessary measure to prevent dehydration during these extreme temperatures.

These measures would go a long way in ensuring the safety and comfort of both our children and their parents. I urge the school authorities and policymakers to take immediate action in this regard.

Thank you for bringing attention to this critical issue.
