VBYCP 2025: Youth parliament and debate competitions held in Kohima, Mokokchung

KOHIMA/MOKOKCHUNG | AUGUST 6 (MExN): As part of the Viksit Bharat Yuva Connect Programme 2025, district-level youth parliament and debate competitions were conducted simultaneously in Kohima and Mokokchung on August 6, focusing on the theme “Emergency Period in India.”

At Kohima, the event was held at Kohima College and organised by the NSS Unit of the college in collaboration with the District Youth Resources Office, Kohima, and the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), with sponsorship from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. Students from St Joseph’s College, Jakhama; Kohima College; and Alder College participated in the competition.

The programme was chaired by Zavikhoto Phinyo, Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce, while the welcome address was delivered by Dr Vitsosie Vupru, Principal of Kohima College. He highlighted India’s ongoing transformation and urged the youth to actively contribute towards building a strong and self-reliant nation. Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, B Henok Buchem, NCS, graced the event as Special Guest. In his address, he encouraged the youth to view democracy as a living force and called upon them to become responsible citizens through active civic engagement.

The debate competition was moderated by Dr Limayangla Pongener, Assistant Professor, Department of English, and focused on the topic “Emergency Period in India.” Vuruthong (St Joseph’s College, Jakhama) secured first place, while Yukhase Jingru (Kohima College) stood second. In the Youth Parliament segment, the first prize went to Kajol Kumari (Alder College), second to Alika T Yeptho (Alder College), and third to Elvina Khangshou (St Joseph’s College, Jakhama). The panel of judges comprised Medo Chale (Assistant Professor, Japu Christian College), Dr Ketuokhrie-ü (Kohima College), and entrepreneur Vikhotuo Sekhose.

Meanwhile, in Mokokchung, the programme was held at the Jubilee Memorial College Hall, Aongza Ward. It was organised by Nehru Yuva Kendra, NSS, and the Department of Political Science, Jubilee Memorial College (JMC) in collaboration with the District Youth Resource & Sports Office, Mokokchung.

Deputy Commissioner Mokokchung, Ajit Kumar Verma IAS, attended as the Special Guest. Addressing the students, he underscored the importance of constitutional values and political awareness, urging youth to be curious, informed, and ready to lead in times of crisis. He emphasized the significance of diversity and democratic responsibility in nation-building.

The youth parliament competition, also centred on the theme “Emergency Period in India,” saw Imlibenla, Nikili, and Menangniba from the Ruling Bench win first, second, and third positions respectively, while Riya Dey, Longcha, and Wapangtola from the Opposition Bench also secured the top three positions. In the debate competition, Sashikumzuk, Imnatula, and Sentipongla won first, second, and third prizes respectively.

The Mokokchung programme was chaired by Chubaienla Imchen, HoD and Assistant Professor, Department of Economics. The welcome address was delivered by District Sports Officer Zhopovi Zecho. A special song was presented by Samuel, a BA 3rd Semester student, and the programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Bendangwabang, HoD and Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science.
