Reigning Naga Wrestling Association champion, Venuzo Dawhuo who recently clenched the Chin Wrestling Championship Title (open) was accorded a ceremonial welcome by the Chakesang Wrestling Association (CWA) and the Thenyizu Village Council (TVC) upon arriving at Dimapur Airport on July 13.
Dawhuo was invited by the Chin Youth Organisation North America (CYONA) to participate for their 12th Biennial Convention held in the US city of Indianapolis, Indiana. The convention, held twice annually had different competitions for the Chin youths to participate in, with wrestling being one of them, said Vekhozo Akhozo head coach who was part of the team that went along with Dawhuo.
“We landed there (USA) on June 29 and then the tournament was held on July 3, it was a momentous occasion,” he added.
Dawhuo who went against the Chin wrestling champion, Mang C Lian won two straight bouts during their match thereby clenching the title. Crediting his win, Dawhuo gave thanks to God above all else, along with the love and support of his family, friends. “All glory and honour goes to God,” he said.
He also gave a special message to the youths of the state noting, “Whatever you do, put God first and then He will make you successful.”
Dawhuo mentioned that another upcoming competition will be held during the month of October by CYONA wherein he hopes to take part as well.
Meanwhile Akhozo (coach) recalled that the style of wrestling of the Chins were closely similar to Naga traditional wrestling making the transition easier for Dawhuo to compete in. “Our style of wrestling is almost the same with only a few technical differences,” he noted.
Members of the CWA and TVC who spoke briefly during the ceremonial welcome, regarded the win as a rare and special moment for the Naga people as a whole.
