Dimapur, March 18 (MExN): Jaipur based Morarka Foundation has been implementing organic farming project in Nagaland for the past three years. Initiated under the Department of Science Technology, GOI, and DST Govt. of Nagaland, Morarka has been imparting awareness programme, training, field demonstrations, and farmer organizations’ meeting on organic farming.  The foundation has also been providing low cost poly – tech vermicomposting units for improving soil fertility, and bio – pesticides for controlling pests and diseases.

The scientific community has established the long-term disadvantage of using chemical fertilizers, which reduce soil fertility. Coupled with this fact, and booming international market for organic farm products, farmers have started adopting Vermiculture to enjoy long term benefits of improved soil fertility and better farm production.

The state project programme coordinator, Masabenba Pongen disclosed that farmers of 39 villages from Peren, Phek, and Kohima district are under the process of getting organic certification for 1300 hectares of land.
