Dimapur, June 4 (MExN): In a shocking incident, reports have emerged of a child abuse case involving a minor girl, aged 11 years, allegedly by one Dr Vibino Sabina from Khonoma village and presently residing in Jotsoma.
According to reports, the principal and staff of Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Jotsoma had observed and rescued the minor child by reporting the matter to the concerned authority. The minor was rescued by the Child Welfare Committee, Kohima on May 30, it stated.
In a press statement, the Pochury Students’ Union (PSU) has expressed utter dismay to learn that the minor who is a sixth-grade student and serving as a domestic helper was physically assaulted regularly and subjected to severe mental trauma from last year until her rescue on May 30.
“Safeguarding the safety and welfare of our children is paramount, and any instance of abuse against any child is a severe breach of their rights and dignity. Ensuring the safety of our children must be a top priority for every member of society, failing to uphold this responsibility undermines the core values of our communities,” PSU stated in its press statement.
Such inhumane treatment of a child is utterly unacceptable and a gross violation of human rights and child welfare laws, it reiterated and demanded “immediate and thorough investigation by the relevant authorities. Justice must be served at the earliest to ensure the protection and well-being of the child and to prevent such atrocities from occurring in the future.” The PSU remains committed to advocating for the rights and dignity of every child, and we will persevere until justice is attained, it added.
Meanwhile, Pochury Hoho, Kohima (PHK), Pochury Women Organisation, Kohima (PWOK) and Pochury Students Union, Kohima (PSUK) also vehemently condemned the incident.
The PHK, PWOK & PSUK in a joint statement extended their gratitude to the principal and staff of GHSS, Jotsoma for reporting the matter to the concerned authority and also to the Child Welfare Committee, Kohima for timely intervention and protection of the minor child.
