Top class contractor Vilelie Khamo was conferred with the 13th Classic Award 2018 today in recognition of his philanthropic contributions.

Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) Speaker, Vikho-o Yhoshu handed over the award during the 24th Classic Club Foundation Day at Hotel Japfu.

Vilelie Khamo, born on February 14, 1960, is the youngest of fourteen siblings. His is a story of grit and determination, as Khamo rose from doing menial jobs during his pre-teen years to becoming a successful businessman.

He worked as a domestic helper in the house of KC Shanna, the then Director of All India Radio, Kohima. Shuttling between household chores and school, his hopes to continue education ended with the transfer of his patron. Back in his village, financial constraints compelled him to give up after passing his sixth grade.

His knack for business was visible since his early days. One anecdote recalls Khamo selling 2000 clay marbles for Rs 2; borrowing another Rs 2 from his mother; going to Kohima to purchase five litres of kerosene at the rate of Rs 4 and selling it at Rs 7 in the village. That was his first taste of success in commerce.

He also worked as a taxi driver, once even chauffeuring the then Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi to lay down the foundation stone of the Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima.

Years later, he was the contractor that built that very stadium.

Khamo’s business breakthrough came when he was given a Rs. 6642 worth contract to construct a culvert by the then PWD South Division Excuxtive Engineer, Y. Chuba Ao. Impressed by his capacity to complete the assignment within the stipulated time, he was awarded bigger contracts which propelled his business.

Today Vilelie Khamo stands tall as top class contractor who has built office buildings of the Directorate of Industries and Commerce, the Commissioner's Office, and the Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima.

NLA Speaker, Yhoshu lauded Khamo’s philanthropy stating that his life is an example and an inspiration, with yeomen and unparalleled social services.

“His benevolence and charities transcend beyond human borders and definitions. His life is the greatest inspiration and encouragement to all of us and the coming generations,” Yhoshu said.
