Dimapur, September 13 (MExN): Taking concrete measure to stop illegal taxation from various underground groups, 74 villages under Kiphire district have henceforth decided not to pay taxes to any underground group.
A press release issued by the VDB Secretary of Moya Village and the Seasonal Chairman of Amahator village under Kiphire district states that a resolution was passed in a meeting held on August 26 at Kiphire, which decided “unanimously that no taxation and percentage deduction from VDB funds and various department communitized funds will be paid/ entertained to any underground faction.” The meeting, attended by all 74 head GBs, Village Council Chairmen’s and Secretaries of Village Development Boards are signatories to the resolution.
The press release also mentions that if any underground group threatens to forcibly deduct funds, no kind of assistance will be extended to the particular faction. On further inquiries, it was learnt from one of the signatories that “one particular faction” demanded 2% deduction from the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme as well as VDB and other communitized funds. However, the decision not to pay taxes was taken on the basis that succumbing to one group’s demand may lead to demands from other factions also. The villages will, however, continue to pay the necessary taxes already being paid to different underground factions. The person informed that a copy of the resolution and a letter will be delivered to all the group headquarters.
