Villages pledge to protect biodiversity at Satoi Range

Zunheboto, September 21 (MExN): Satoi Range located in the western most region of the Zunheboto district of Nagaland harbour temperate and subtropical broadleaf forest, one of lush primary forest in the state.
The entire range has been recognised as ‘important birds area’ for it rich bird diversity and the forest host some of the rarest and endangered species includes the state bird Blyth’s Tragopan, Western Hoolock Gibbon, Chinese Pangolin, Great Hornbill making it biodiversity rich area.
The Foundation for Ecological Security (FES), Northeast Regional Cell, Guwahati in a press release said that on September 19, representatives from the Community Conserved Areas (CCAs) of the range participated in a stakeholder’s consultation meeting held at Satoi Town to initiate dialogue on the biodiversity conservation, species conservation and natural resource management.
The Satoi Range is surrounded by 10 villages and each village has Community Conserved Areas in the range contiguous with each others. During the course of discussion, the representatives discussed the conservation issues pertaining to Satoi range and unanimously resolved that collective actions are require involving all the concerned stakeholders to address the biodiversity conservation issues at the range level. It was agreed that a range level multi-stakeholder forum is necessary to initiate dialogues and collaborative conservation actions.
During the discussion, the participants also discussed possible objectives, roles and responsibility and membership of the multi-stakeholders forum and resolved that in the follow up meeting the multi-stakeholders forum will be official form including all stakeholders.
The consultation meeting was organised by the Foundation for Ecological Security (FES). FES has been working with the CCAs to facilitate community led conservation and protection of the threatened species.
