In a major flare-up related to the forthcoming state assembly elections, supporters of two candidates from 28 Koridang A/C under Mokokchung district are reported to have resorted to violence leaving seventeen vehicles and  two houses damaged. Two of the damaged vehicles, Maruti Gypsies, were set afire. One of the damaged houses belonged to one Katem Longchar located at Alichen, and the other damaged house belonged to one Meyatsungla at Longkhum village. The incident is reported to have occurred late last evening at around 7:00 to 8:00 PM, as per reports received from Police Station 2, Mokokchung.

No further detailed report could be furnished till the filing of this news report as access to the area was curtailed by the villagers. Even though personnel from 2nd NAP, IRB and DEF Mokokchung have been stationed, the situation in the area is still considered to be tense and further repercussions are feared. It may be mentioned that Alichen falls under Longkhum village territory. The village is a major player in the constituency and it is reported that a retired bureaucrat from the village, TC Longchar, a former Chief Engineer of PWD (Mech.), will be contesting the forthcoming election as an independent candidate. The Congress has allotted its ticket to Moatemjen Imchen of Mangmetong village, also a major player in the constituency to contest in the election. The constituency was represented by the ex-minister of Education, Imkong L.Imchen, also hailing from Mangmetong village.

Further, in a significant political development, 23 Impur A/C Congress candidate Nungsangyapang secured a major fillip to winning the next election if reports of his native village Mopungchuket and neighboring Sungratsu arriving at a joint resolution is to be true. Nungsanayapang is in the fray contesting against NPF candidate Akangtemjen and retired bureaucrat TN Mannen, of the RJD, both from Longjang village.

A close confidant in the Nungsangyapang camp disclosed that Mopungchuket and Sungratsu villages represented by respective village council members and Senso Mungdang leaders of both villages have signed a memorandum of understanding today at Mopungchuket village whereby it was resolved that the consensus candidate from Mopungchuket will be supported by both villages. However, no formal declaration in this regard has been made available to the press by the parties concerned till the filing of this repo

t. Mention may be made here that Mopungchuket, Longjang and Sungratsu villages are the three key players in 23 Impur A/C.
24 Angetyongpang A/C is also being affected by the push and pull of the election wave going about the state. In a press release issued by its Assistant Secretary, S.Toshi, it was disclosed that the NPF office bearers of the constituency, including its ‘Area Executive’ and ‘Area Youth’ office bearers, numbering fifty one party workers, had a joint meeting today resulting in the dissolution of the NPF in the constituency.  It was further stated that they have resolved to support Jungshilemba, ex-Parliamentary Secretary, and whichever party that may offer him the ticket to contest in the forthcoming election.
