Dimapur | September 26
A Fast Track Special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court in Dimapur brought closure to a six years old sexual abuse case, sentencing the accused to 38 years of Rigourous Imprisonment. The defendant was a visually impaired man, Temjenyapang (47 years), who was arrested in May 2019 on charges of sexually abusing four minor girls at a school for the visually impaired he ran in Dimapur. The victims were all minors, who ranged 4-14 years in age at the time.
The sentence was passed by special judge Khesheli Chishi on September 26. According to a press note issued by the Special Public Prosecutor, the judge, while pronouncing the conviction, “Observed that the offence was aggravated not only by the vulnerability of the victims but also by the breach of trust and protection owed to them.”
According to the case file, the sexual abuse came to light following an investigation into alleged harassment of some male wards of the school by the accused, who was the proprietor as well as the principal of the school. The male wards informed the Childline about their principal harassing them in an inebriated state. It was in May 2019, following which a suo moto case was filed by the Women Police Station, Dimapur, against the accused for alleged harassment. The investigation led to the unravelling of a web of sexual abuse perpetrated by the accused proprietor-cum-principal taking advantage of his position.
