Vox Populi vis-a-vis Portfolio Allocation

Rümatho Nyusou

When the supporters of some political heavyweights sneeze in the political corridors of Kohima, Dimapur, Mokokchung and the likes, the political Commander in Chief in his citadel catches cold. As anticipated, it had happened again this time during the allocation of portfolios to the elected Legislatures in the ruling party. This indicates that there is always extra room to accommodate extra demands when and if it involves prominent figures from a prominent community.

It should not be forgotten that elsewhere there were also other Naga people living in the periphery of the state who had cried for justice. The voice of these people seems to have fallen on deaf ears. Their cry remains a cry in the wilderness. Whether or not something will happen in the next few days remains a matter of speculation. Anyway, justice delayed is justice denied.

Trapped in a catch-22 situation for over fifty years under different political parties and leadership without a single cabinet in the history of the constituency, and yet religiously keeping their fingers crossed, the people of Pochury have been waiting and waiting to see if any Naga leader worth his salt would appear on the scene to take notice of their sacrifice and accord due recognition to their demand for a fair deal. The wait seems to be futile. In their disillusionment people are now beginning to even think that it is virtually bad karma for minority communities like the Pochury to be born as one.

In democracy every vote counts and every community matters. The demand for a fair representation of every constituent member is a just demand. Considering the educational qualification, experience, and political support the Legislature of the 20 Meluri A/C has gathered behind him and the size of the constituency he represents, the demand of the Pochury frontal organizations is legitimate when they say that he merits a more befitting office, not less than a cabinet berth. The ball is now in the Chief Minister’s court. What will be his take? Let’s wait and see.
