KOHIMA: Kohima city would soon see an improved environment, cleaner and pollution free atmosphere as Minister for Planning & Urban Development Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu dedicated the first demo facility on Solid Waste Management project in north east region here this morning under the aegis of the Kohima Town Municipal Council (KMC) in collaboration with Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) and supported by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

“The new plant that we are launching today is not simply to throw away the waste materials but to convert them into useful purpose by way of recycling some of the material and also producing organic manure for various crops,” Dr. Shurhozelie said.

Stating that the project would benefit the citizen to a large extent, the minister stressed the need to learn civic sense which was lacking in the capital city.

In order to make the city clean and to minimize the pollution problem, the minister sought co-operation of different NGOs and individuals for effective management of the project.

KMC chairperson Menuovilie Kesiezie also sought the participation and co-operation from each and every individual to bring civic sense and make the best use of the project. He hoped that the project would bring about significant change to the city and help achieve a hygienic, clean and better environment.

In the North Eastern region, Kohima is the first town which has been selected by CPCB for such project. The total cost of this project is Rs. 3.55 crores. This project was sanctioned by CPCB in September 2005 and the duration of the project is 36 months, said Rusovil John, member secretary Nagaland Pollution Control Board.

Under this project, NPCB and KMC sought public participation for the success of the project.

The residents of Kohima will also participate in the project where they will undertake segregation of waste at the household level into Biodegradable (green bins) and recyclable wastes (blue bins) and deposit the segregated waster into similar bins which will be placed in strategic locations of the town,” Rusovil said.

NPCB along with KMC, he said, was also planning to organize awareness campaigns in the town. The commercial areas in Kohima will have to cooperate so that such establishments properly disposed their waste.

Under this project, it is planned to set up a composting plant of 30 TPD capacity near Cieswema Bawe. The compost can be utilized within the state or can be sold to other states.

In order to protect the hills and maintain good environment as well as scenic beauty, it is also proposed to set up a well-designed landfill facility.

“With this landfill facility, the existing dumping site on NH 39 will be abandoned and reclaimed,” Rusovil added.

This is a new beginning. Awareness will be created to the general public. There will be competitions amongst the wards and the cleanest and most hygienic ward would be handsomely acknowledged with prize, said Kohima deputy commissioner R. Ramakhrishnan

The Solid Waste Management would serve as sustainable system in disposing the garbage in the state capital said deputy Chairperson Vipopal Kintso. For a start, it would be distributed to the panchayats and educational institutions.
The project aims to create efficient, reliable and holistic system for management of solid waste so as to achieve a garbage free environment and improve the quality of life.

ADC (J) Kohima Imjung M. Panger also spoke on the occasion. The function was chaired by Sanitation Committee convenor Keduolhoulie. Rev. Hotokhu Sema, president Town Pastor Fellowship, Kohima said pronounced prayer.
