WASU criticizes state govt for limited faculty appointment at WNMC, Mon

MON, SEPTEMBER 2 (MExN): The Wakching Area Students’ Union (WASU) has voiced strong dissatisfaction with the recent appointment of only three lecturer posts at Wakching New Model College, Mon.

In a press statement, WASU criticized the Directorate of Higher Education’s notification (No.HTE/HE/NPSC/12-7/2022/1388), issued on August 28, 2024, which announced the posting of Assistant Professors to the college. The union expressed frustration over what it views as inadequate staffing for the institution, which has been operational since its inauguration on February 3, 2019.

According to WASU, the State Government and concerned department have failed to provide the necessary teaching and non-teaching staff or essential resources to the college over the past four years. This has impacted many students from underprivileged backgrounds who rely on the college for their education in honours subjects, as it is the only science college in Mon District. The state government has shown a lack of respect and has not provided equal opportunities for these students, it stated.

The union also highlighted that no Honours courses or subjects have been introduced at the college, further exacerbating the issue. Due to the shortage of teaching faculty, the accommodation of students are less in this current academic year, it pointed out.

It stated that all non-teaching staff should be appointed in accordance with the post-creation notification, and specific honours subjects should be provided and allowed in order to benefit the students. It also sought explanation on why the State Government delayed or failed to appoint sufficient lecturers at the college.

WASU has appealed the State Government and the concerned department to look into the matter immediately for the welfare of students and the smooth functioning of classes and urged that complete subject lecturers be appointed at this only science college in the Mon district.
