WBSU calls for unity and peace in Wesea region

DIMAPUR, AUGUST 11 (MExN): The Wesea Naga Students Union (WNSU) has issued an open letter urging the people of Wesea to come together and reject the growing divisions fueled by “ethnonationalism and extremist ideologies.” The letter, signed by Ruth Yimchunger, Vice President of the WNSU, emphasizes the need for a collective identity that transcends ethnic lines.

"As students and future leaders of this region, we write to you with a deep sense of urgency and responsibility," the press release stated. It expressed concern over the increasing fragmentation of communities within Wesea, warning that such divisions could lead to further destruction. "We believe that the time has come for us, the younger generation, to take a stand for the future of our people and our homeland, Wesea," it added.

The union argued that unity is the key to overcoming the challenges that lie ahead. "We must begin by uniting as one people. Before identifying ourselves as Nagas, Kukis, Meiteis, or members of any other ethnic group, we must see ourselves first and foremost as Weseans," it said. The union emphasized that the strength of Wesea lies in its diversity and the shared identity of its people, urging all communities to reject divisive forces.

Addressing the sensitive issue of the term "Wesea," the union clarifies that it should not be interpreted as a call for secession or separation from India. "We want to make it clear that when we speak of Wesea, we do not necessarily imply secession or separation from the rest of India," the union explained. It called for greater cooperation, coexistence, and mutual respect among the region's diverse communities, highlighting the similarities that bind them together.

The union also appealed to extremist groups in the region to reconsider their approach. "We appeal to you to lay down your arms and work for the common good," it urged. The students advocated for a focus on education, healthcare, and development, emphasizing that violence will only lead to more bloodshed.

The union reaffirmed their commitment to celebrating both Naga Independence Day and Indian Independence Day, recognizing the importance of both flags in their identity. "Both flags symbolize important aspects of our identity, and both deserve our respect," they stated.
