WCYO president allegedly assaulted

Youth bodies condemn incident, demand swift justice

Dimapur, May 6 (MExN): The Western Chakhesang Youth Organisation (WCYO) and the Western Sumi Youth Front (WSYF) on Wednesday strongly condemned the assault on the WCYO president, calling for swift legal action against those involved.

In a statement, the WCYO said its president was physically assaulted and his vehicle vandalised by a group of individuals who obstructed his passage on the night of May 2 between 8:30 pm and 9:00 pm at Naga United Village in Chümoukedima district.

Describing the incident as unacceptable, the organisation said such acts of violence and vandalism violate the principles of unity and create fear in society. “The use of physical force combined with damage to private property reflects aggression and incivility that has no place in a civilised society,” it said.

The WCYO urged law enforcement authorities to carry out a prompt and thorough investigation using all available evidence and ensure that those responsible are held fully accountable under the law.

WSYF: The Western Sumi Youth Front (WSYF) also condemned the incident, terming it “cowardly” and unacceptable. In a separate statement, the WSYF said the youth leader was allegedly attacked by five unidentified individuals on the same night at Naga United Village.

“Such acts of violence and the tendency to take the law into one’s own hands are highly condemnable and unacceptable,” the organisation said, emphasising that differences or misunderstandings must be resolved through dialogue and lawful means.

The WSYF noted that an FIR was lodged on the day of the incident and said one of the accused has been arrested and is currently in police custody, while four others remain absconding.

Urging immediate action, the organisation called on law enforcement agencies to apprehend the remaining accused and ensure that justice is delivered without delay.

The WSYF also expressed solidarity with the victim and his family, extending its sympathy and wishing him a speedy recovery.

Reiterating its commitment to peace, unity and the rule of law, the organisation appealed to all sections of society to uphold these values and refrain from acts of violence.
