Special lecture on quality education with special reference to Nagaland held
Kohima, November 6 (MExN): A one day special lecture on ‘Quality education in higher education with special reference to Nagaland’ was held at Model Christian College (MCC), Kohima with Rev. Fr. Dr. Anand Pereira SJ, Rector, St. Paul Institutions, Phesama as the guest lecturer.
In the first half of the programme, Rev. Fr. Dr. Anand deliberated on the topic ‘Quality education in higher education in Nagaland’. Highlighting educational systems from a historical and global perspective, he outlined that growth of higher education in India is in terms of quantity and not quality. He was of the opinion that the Indian pedagogy of learning is mostly focused on memorisation and thus, resulting in a large number of "unemployable" graduates in India.
In Nagaland context, he stated that although the state has a total of 68 colleges, most colleges do not have decent infrastructural facilities. The guest lecturer also pointed out that most teachers are unenthusiastic to attend refresher courses or other enhancement programmes. Terming that education in Nagaland is “basically a transition for life,” he maintained that “we don’t prepare our students for life,” according to a press release.
Stressing on need to seriously look into the educational system, he highlighted the importance of inculcating natural culture into our educational culture. He further stressed upon the need for bringing change on all levels, namely policy makers, teachers and students. He opined that teachers need to update, conduct research and have holistic approach towards education. He also urged the students to have change in attitude towards education, have perseverance and work hard.
The second session of the day long programme was marked by a brief discourse on the topic ‘Role of teachers in imparting quality education in higher education’ and related activity/exercises for the participating teachers, staffs and managing members of the college. Under this theme, the guest lecturer emphasised on the importance of the pedagogical process in terms of the context, experience, reflection, action and evaluation.
Earlier, the programme commenced with an invocation prayer by Supongkala, E.U president, a brief address was given by the principal, MCC and a special number by Bendangsunep, B.Sc 2nd semester. The programme was chaired by Akangmongla Kichu, Asst. Professor, Department of English, MCC.
