We haven't spoken for even one hour in RS in 55 years: KG Kenye

Member of Parliament to the Rajya Sabha, KG Kenye on Wednesday remarked that lawmakers from Nagaland have not even taken one hour of the RS in 55 years while arguing for an extra couple of minutes to speak during the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s speech.

The MP, who is secretary general to the Naga Peoples Front (NPF), said this when RS chairman M Venkaiah Naidu reminded him to conclude after he crossed the three minutes given time to address the house.

"I would request the Chairman to please grant me a little more time. In the last 55 years, my predecessors and I put together, I don't think we have even taken one hour of proceedings of this House," Kenye said, prompting Naidu to say that he would get one more minute.

Kenye's remarks surprised Naidu, who decided to check Parliamentary records while wondering why members have not even got an hour to speak over these years.

"I don't know why members have not even got one hour in the last 50 years. This is a big surprise to me. I will go through records, if at all it is true," the RS chairman said in response.

Kenye in his address also urged the Government of India to take up the Naga peace process with all earnestness.   He lamented that the President did not make mention on the peace talk which is a high profile peace process in this country which has been dragging on the last two and a half decade.

The last government had shown so much determination to solve it immediately back in 2014 but over the year the government is losing the steam and the longer this drags on, it will tax both the national and the regional interest, Kenye pointed out.

On the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), Kenye appealed the Centre to interact more with the states which are likely to be affected.

Voicing strongly, Kenye said “We don’t like to be imposed with a dictate by the centre as we share the nation’s problem. Nation’s problem is our problem but the nation must think first of its own citizens welfare and interest before thinking on bringing further from outside.”
