Gautam Mukhopadhaya, ambassador (Retired) today said the people of the north east need to make North East region together with its regional neighbours into a more productive rather consuming region.
“We need to harness the local products, scale them up, improved quality of design and improved access to market,” he said while addressing the concluding session of the North East Connectivity Summit here.
We need to enhance productivity of the region so that we can become engine of growth and engine of trade, he said. He said the key to productivity, the key to connectivity, the key to this entire political aspiration we have to be better connected within the region and outside the region with Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar and other countries. The key to this in many ways is going to be entrepreneurship, he said.
He said in all the metropolitan cities of India, we see service sector increasingly populated by people from the north east. According to Air Asia, 25 % of caple crew comes for the north east. “That is a remarkable achievement for small region of the country. But I think it is not enough that we are service providers.”
We need to make a step to become actually owners, proprietors and entrepreneurs, he said. Why should we don’t have North east entrepreneurs investing in real estate, IT, local industry, food processing, food products in other parts of the country,” he posed.
