“Whether there is reservation or no reservation, we should give space to women in our society,” asserted Y. Kikheto Sema IAS, Secretary, Land Resources, Government of Nagaland.

Speaking as guest speaker at the 13th Annual Freshers’ Social cum General Session of Chang Students’ Union Kohima (CSUK) at Ura Academy Hall, Kohima, Kikheto acknowledged that the forefathers had handed down many values but it did not mean that the present generation should continue with values that are obsolete and no more applicable today.

He said that the CSUK theme, “Fostering the right mindset for a new venture” was aptly quoted as there were lot of areas where the younger generation should focus on by changing old mindsets to newer and better ones to venture into the future. “Changing according to time and atmosphere is the right mindset which will usher in positive changes,” Kikheto added. He said that the theme was applicable not only to the Chang students but could be applied in broader terms to the entire Naga society.

He also talked about doing away with isms as it was destroying the very fabric of Naga society which was once very closely knitted. He said for an overall progressive Naga society, one needs to speak for another in appreciation rather than trying to bring each other down.

Kikheto emphasized on changing the electioneering system in the state and urged upon the students to go back to their villages and communities and spread awareness on clean election.

“Anything worthwhile is worth doing poorly at first,” he said and added that the clean election campaign may not bring immediate results but that changes could be seen steadily.

Kikheto advised the students to be resolute in their goals and asked them to remember that the forces inside them were stronger than any force against them.

He told the freshers as well as the senior that such occasions were a time for them to interact and learn from each other.

President, Chang Union Kohima also spoke briefly during the programme. The students presented special numbers and cultural items during the programme which was attended by a host of Chang leaders and student leaders from other communities as well.
