NSDMA assesses widespread damage, advises citizens to stay cautious

Dimapur, March 17 (MExN): The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) is assessing widespread damage to residential houses and infrastructure following strong winds, accompanied by rain and hailstorm that lashed several districts over the past few days.

According to the NSDMA press release, reports from the affected areas indicated that multiple households sustained structural damage due to strong winds. The adverse weather also led to uprooting of trees at several locations, causing further damage to property.

It added that the disruption of power supply was reported in some areas following the adverse weather conditions. As per preliminary reports received from the districts, several incidents of damage to property have been reported. 

 

As many as 31 families were affected after a windstorm struck several areas in Chümoukedima district, including Piphema, Sovima, and other villages, according to the District Situation Report (DSR).

Houses have sustained varying degrees of damage, including severely and partially damaged kutcha and pucca structures, along with damage to attached structures. Essential infrastructure, including electric poles and community structures, was impacted as well. No casualties or injuries have been reported so far. Assessment of crop damage and evacuation details are under process, and relief measures are being initiated, the NSDMA stated.

Further damages to houses and shops have been reported from Piphema and surrounding areas. More reports from the district are awaited.

At least 15 families and a Primary Health Centre (PHC) were affected following a flash flood and related incidents in Peren district. According to reports, houses have sustained damage, including three that were fully destroyed, eight that were severely damaged, and four that suffered partial damage.

Incidents were reported from multiple locations, including New Jalukie village and Ngwalwa circle. Additional damage to houses were reported from Pehlan village under Ahthibung subdivision. Further reports from various subdivisions in the district are awaited.

 

In Mokokchung district, preliminary reports received from ADC Mangkolemba indicated damages caused by the windstorm. Detailed reports are being compiled through the DSR. Damage reports have been received from Bhandari and Baghty area under Wokha district. Detailed assessment is awaited, it stated.

In Zunheboto district, the quarter of a nurse adjacent to CHC Akuluto was damaged due to strong winds. In Tuensang district, damages have been reported from Longkhim subdivision, Tuensang town (Phingjang area) and Trumzong area, where houses sustained damage. In Niuland district, damage has been reported from Yeveto village.

In Mon district, GMS Totok Chingha School sustained damage due to heavy storm and rain. Roofing of five classrooms and the mid-day meal storage room were damaged, and food grains meant for the mid-day meal programme were affected, disrupting normal school functioning.

The NSDMA, Home Department, is closely monitoring the situation in the affected areas, the release stated. Citizens have been advised to remain cautious during such extreme weather conditions and to take necessary safety precautions. More reports are awaited.
