Dimapur March 16 (MExN): Reacting to reports carried in a section of the local print media, the Nagaland University Teachers Association (NUTA) has expressed regret that it was misquoted on the issue of a joint representation by the two Nagaland MPs TR Zeliang and Wangyuh Konyak whereby it was stated that a joint representation would be submitted to the Visitor and the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) office and not “to the Parliament” as reported.
Expressing concern that the misquote has created misunderstanding on the particular statement the association asked that the statement be verified through the live recording by the TV channel W2 which covered the press conference.
Reiterating its stand for transparency, accountability and academic excellence in the university the association reminded that it was not for playing politics.
“We categorically state that at no time had we stated that that the two MPs have a nexus with Professor GD Sharma, the Vice-chancellor of Nagaland University as stated by the two MPs. Secondly at no point of time have we tried to assassinate the ‘character of any elected member or any political parties’” NUTA President Rosemary Dzuvichu and CEC NUTA President Dr Akali Sema stated.
The NUTA also reaffirmed its earlier statement expressing disappointment with the two MPs for not understanding the urgency of the crisis in the Nagaland University and delaying submission of the joint representation to the Visitor’s office. “NUA had also requested the honorable MPs to submit a representation to the MHRD even if the Visitor is out of the country. Till the day, the NUTA delegation left Delhi of 11th March morning no information was received about their representation. On the 10th March, the honorable MP TR Zeliang had informed the CEC NUTA President that they would be writing the representation and faxing us a copy at the earliest” the NUTA rejoinder stated.
While thanking the two MPs for their effort “in finally writing the representation” the NUTA expressed surprise that till March 15, eleven days after the NUTA delegation met them in Delhi, they still had not submitted the ‘very important’ representation either to the Rashtrapathi Bhavan or the MHRD. Reminding that in April 2005 the NUTA delegation which met with Arjun Singh in Delhi on the NU Library Scam and the fake certificate issue on GD Sharma also endorsed all relevant documents to MP Konyak for necessary follow-up from his side as a representative, the association expressed disappointment that till date no queries have been forwarded in the Parliament on the NU issue by either of the two MPs.
The NUTA also termed it “unfortunate” that MP Konyak threatened that unless the NUTA delegates issue a public apology, he would not allow the joint representation to be submitted to the president.
“This was clearly conveyed to the President CEC NUTA by the honorable MP Shri TR Zeliang on the 15th March, 2006. It is even unfortunate that their representation dated 10th March 2006 has been circulated to the local dailies whereas till the afternoon of the 15th March 2006 they had not submitted this document to the President of India “ the NUTA rued.
