•-When we read and hear about ‘rape’ or allegedly ‘raped’ by one so and so, most of the questions raised are where? When? Who? What type of girl/woman? Etc yet we fail to inquire about the culprits like what type of background he is from or kind of childhood he had or has he done the act as a sane person or mentally deranged or whatsoever. Again we fail to bring or award the culprits (perverts) with the befitting punishment. ‘Law of the land’ we often read and hear when the act is done and condemnation follows. Should we then interpret it as the system which hardly awards 6-7 years maximum imprisonment or our customary law where most of the culprits are exiled from one colony/place/village to another? Befitting punishment for this particular crime should be a punishment which should also act as a deterrent to future perverts. He (no offence to masculine gender but all offenders are men) should be castrated after proper trial with evidence or proven guilty. This may seem a bit harsh in our advanced/developed society but when the act itself is crude and inhuman why should the victims be lenient or forgiving?
Having said that, however, it is upto the legislators, bureaucrats, technocrats, scholars, religious institutions, parents etc to come together and try to bring about solutions to this deadly threat which is eating away our children and society.
Hence, as a start an appeal to all mothers who are the most affected by this act especially those who are having daughters losing sleeps, getting phobic, goose pimples whenever these acts are being done to play an important role. Most of us would think how can we start or play a role in eradicating this menace? This writer’s understanding is at least we can teach our sons to be kind and caring to all womenfolk irrespective of age, color and class, never abuse or assault whatever the circumstances be, instill those values from their very young age. If we mothers can ‘teach our children well’ this particular menace will eventually lessen in our society and we can go on with our lives feeling secured, carrying the lesser worries and sleep peacefully at night.
